2019-20 Family Law SECTION REPORT
Elizabeth “Libby” James, Chair and Caroline Mitchell, Vice Chair

During the 2019-20-year, leadership of the Family Law section offered various educational, social, and networking opportunities to assist with section member’s professional development aspirations.

In November, the Family Law Section and the Immigration Section co-hosted an evening of networking at Legion Brewing, SouthPark, as well as networking coffee. In December, the section hosted its most anticipated holiday event, at Clutch.

The educational programs “It's Not Over Until It's Over: What Family Law Attorneys Need to Know About Appeals, as well as “Tax Ramifications Confronted in Family Law Cases”, were presented within the year.

Members of the Family Law Section contributed to the MBF Brick Memorial fund, in honor of Nelson Casstevens and Billie Ellerbe,  beloved practitioners and a members of the 26th judicial district bar since 1966.

Through the efforts of the leadership and its member’s support, membership increased during the year.

Due to the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, social, and networking events, planned from March through June were cancelled, including a joint networking event that was planned at NAPA on Providence, in conjunction with the Civil Litigation Section, as well as the multi section, Charlotte Knights Baseball game.

The leadership of the Family Law Section is always exploring ways to enhance membership experiences. Please submit any ideas to sections@meckbar.org.
