Jason St. Aubin Candidate for the Allen Seat* |
|
Firm/Organization: Marcilliat & Mills PLLC Practice Areas: Criminal Defense, White Collar Education: Duke University, B.A. 2002, University of Illinois College of Law, J.D. cum laude 2005 Bar & Court Admissions: North Carolina State Bar, Federal Bar for the Western District of North Carolina, Federal Bar for the Middle District of North Carolina Civic & Community Involvement: For 17 years, I served our community as an Assistant Public Defender, representing some of the most disadvantaged members of Mecklenburg County and working hand in hand with dozens of local non-profit institutions to enrich their lives. I took the most pride for my work on behalf of those with severe mental illness charged with serious violent felony crimes. My clients struggling with overcoming the burdens of incapacity to proceed in the court system and the resulting fallout were featured in several episodes of the award-winning radio series “Fractured,” which was aired on WFAE in Charlotte. Professional Involvement: Currently, I serve as a Member At Large on the inaugural Board of Directors for the newly formed 26th Judicial District Bar. We streamlined the bifurcation process, decreasing dues countywide while maintaining the same level of member support. Please describe in 150 words or less why you would be the best candidate for the State Bar Council: As a Charlotte high school graduate, and having practiced law here for nearly 20 years, I have deep connections to our county and to our bar. During that time, I have taken on unique challenges such as being the first attorney in our county to try a case to verdict by jury in over a year, after the CoVid pandemic crippled our court system. As a member of the State Bar Council, I will bring a different perspective and limitless energy to the table, coupled with the advantage of knowing at any given moment what our current local needs are due to my coexisting role on our Board of Directors. *The Allen Seat is the seat currently held by David Neal Allen, who is serving a third consecutive term ending December 31, 2024, and is thus ineligible for re-election at this time. |
