2017-18 Estate Planning & Probate Section Report
Stephanie C. Daniel, Chair and Michael F. Anderson, Vice Chair

We would like to thank all who participated in this year’s Estate Planning & Probate Section events and to encourage interested attorneys to sign up for the Section this upcoming year. We had a great year which included several innovative takes on our traditional events. It was important as we planned the year to revitalize the Section and to hold events which served multiple purposes for our members.

During the 2017-18 year, the Estate Planning & Probate Section worked to ensure members stayed up-to-date on relevant information and changes impacts through the Section’s CLE offerings. We also invited members from other sections to provide valuable networking opportunities with attorneys from other practice areas. The Section started off the year by hosting a kick-off meeting and social at Burton’s in October, offering Section members an opportunity to: 1) network; 2) get to know other practitioners; and 3) establish the Section’s goals for the year. During the meeting, Section members planned two full days of CLE and discussed the development of a Section-specific mentoring program.

In January, the Section hosted two full-day CLE programs in addition to our Section’s participation in the Annual Review CLE in February. The Section’s CLE programs -- “2018 Basics of Estate Planning, Administration & Litigation” and “2018 Advanced Issues in Estate Planning” – focused on a variety of issues currently impacting the estate planning and probate practice areas such as drafting, the new North Carolina Uniform Power of Attorney Act, diminished capacity, fiduciary litigation, adult guardianships, and trust modifications.

Meetings, networking and social opportunities for members consisted of two meetings and four networking opportunities. The winter meeting and networking social was hosted at Blue Blaze Brewery following the January 19th CLE progarm. The Section also worked with the Young Lawyers Division to host a joint interest meeting and presentation for attorneys interested in the practice area providing an opportunity to hear from seasoned Estate & Probate attorneys. Finally, the year finished with an Oyster Roast to celebrate the end of a successful year, network and invite new members to the Section.

We would like to thank all those who served as speakers during the 2017-18 year. The year would not have been a success without your gracious support.

Section leaders look forward to the upcoming year, including continued social opportunities and CLE programming.  Any ideas or suggestions for future events or CLE programs may be submitted to
