2019-20 Law & Society Committee Report
Erin Illman, Chair
The Mecklenburg County Bar (MCB) and Mecklenburg Bar Foundation (MBF) hosted the 30th annual Law & Society Luncheon on Thursday, October 31 at the Hilton Charlotte Center City. Our keynote speaker was Former Marine turned endurance athlete Eric McElvenny.
Eric is an amputee endurance athlete living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He earned
a mechanical engineering degree from the United States Naval Academy in 2006 while preparing for his service as a Marine Corps Infantry Officer. Eric deployed three times as a Marine and on his final tour, in Afghanistan, was wounded after stepping on an IED. Eric suffered the amputation of his right leg below the knee, a life-changing opportunity that began his next journey.
Faced with a physical challenge and an uncertain future, Eric made a promise to himself to run an Ironman Triathlon. On his journey from the hospital bed in southern California to the finish line in Kona, Hawaii, he realized that the challenge and adversity he was up against and the techniques he used to reach the finish line could be used against the challenges we all entertain in our daily lives. When not training, racing and delivering inspiration, Eric can be found with his wife Rachel and three children in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
A joint venture of the Mecklenburg County Bar & Mecklenburg Bar Foundation, the Law & Society Luncheon is held annually to bring a speaker of interest to the public and the legal community. Proceeds from the event benefit the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation to support grants awarded to community projects/organizations with a legal nexus and to support various Bar and Foundation initiatives.
The Law & Society Luncheon also includes the presentation of the Ayscue Professionalism Award, which recognizes a current or former MCB member for exemplary professionalism through outstanding service to the MCB and the community. This year's award winner was Jonathan E. Buchan, Jr.
The Mecklenburg County Bar and the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation greatly appreciate the generous donations of the following sponsors for this event. Proceeds benefit the charitable works of the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation.
