Mecklenburg County Bar
Dear Fellow Bar member,
The Mecklenburg County Bar (MCB) is the heartbeat of and #1 resource for the greater Charlotte metropolitan legal community. Our mission is to serve the public and YOU, our members, through a variety of benefits and opportunities, many of which are highlighted below. We are 5,600 members strong and encourage you to join your colleagues in supporting the community, the profession, and each other.
Like you, the MCB has had to become a virtual organization over the past few months and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Despite these challenges, there are still several ways you can get involved, network with your fellow Bar members, and benefit from your MCB membership, including:
Continuing Legal Education - More than 125 accredited CLE programs are offered annually by the MCB and more than 90 online CLE programs are available on-demand at MeckBar.org. We concentrate on local trends and developments and are responsive to members’ requests for trainings and delivery methods.
Committee Membership & Leadership Opportunities - The goals of the MCB and Mecklenburg Bar Foundation (MBF) are accomplished through the work of established, energetic committees. There are 27 MCB and MBF committees on which to serve.
Lawyer Referral Service - The MCB Lawyer Referral Service is an ABA-accredited service that has provided client referrals to its lawyer panel members for more than 60 years. Newly restructured in 2019-20, the LRS is now a robust online system operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week providing members more referrals than ever before.
Linking Lawyers Mentoring Program - This program provides a broad and flexible opportunity for mentorship within the MCB. Whether you are starting out as a new attorney, in the midst of a career transition, seeking to expand your network of peers, or looking to give back, Linking Lawyers provides an avenue in which to discuss your career in the legal profession.
Networking & Social Events - Networking and social activities are scheduled throughout the year for MCB members including monthly luncheons on community issues, Annual Meeting, Law Day, Law & Society, Holiday Party and the Legal Eagle Charity Golf Tournament.
MCB Section Membership - The MCB offers 12 sections through which you can network and develop skills with attorneys who practice in the same area.
Free Member Photos – At various times throughout the year, the MCB offers free headshot photo sessions for all MCB members. Digital copies of all headshots taken are provided free of charge.
Young Lawyers Division - If you are 36 years of age or younger, or within your first three years of practicing law, you are eligible for membership in the MCB YLD.
In addition to the list above, we invite you to check out the MCB’s new podcast, The 26th, and the variety of vendor and other benefits listed on MeckBar.org.
In order to truly maximize the value of your MCB membership, it is incumbent upon you as a member to be proactive in this process. I encourage you to become involved with your Bar. Join a section of interest or apply to join a committee. Your interest and continued involvement will prove to be beneficial both to you and your Bar. This Bar needs the leadership inherent in each one of you as leadership is a hallmark of our noble profession.
Secondarily, through your involvement, you will make new friends. Your Bar is also an excellent source to create a referral base and establish colleague mentoring, or what is commonly referred to as one’s “go to person”.
Also, take the time to introduce yourself to and develop a relationship with your excellent Bar staff. They are here to serve you and can guide you through what all your Bar has to offer.
If you are already involved, invite a colleague to join you at your next MCB event. We are eager to help you do what matters to you.
With Warm Regards,
M. Heath Gilbert, Jr.
2020-21 President, Mecklenburg County Bar
