Mecklenburg County Bar
President's Letter

Dear Fellow Bar member,

The Mecklenburg County Bar (MCB) is the heartbeat of and #1 resource for the greater Charlotte metropolitan legal community. Our mission is to serve the public and YOU, our members, through a variety of benefits and opportunities, many of which are highlighted below. We are 5,400 members strong and encourage you to join your colleagues in supporting the community, the profession, and each other.

Mecklenburg County Bar Member Benefits

Bar & Foundation Center - Meeting, conference and event spaces are available for Bar members to use at no cost during normal business hours. The Bar & Foundation Center is located at 2850 Zebulon Avenue off Rozzelles Ferry Road. With approximately 24,000 square feet, the Bar & Foundation Center has 150 parking spaces and leading-edge technology throughout the building. After-hour usage for our members and for groups consistent with our policy is available at a rate of $100/hour. For more information or to make reservations, please visit MeckBar.org.

Committee Membership - The goals of the MCB and Mecklenburg Bar Foundation (MBF) are accomplished through the work of established, energetic committees. There are 27 MCB and MBF committees on which to serve.

Continuing Legal Education - More than 125 accredited CLE programs are offered annually by the MCB and more than 90 online CLE programs are available on-demand at MeckBar.org. We concentrate on local trends and developments and are responsive to members’ requests for training. For the third year in a row, we offered MCB members a tuition-free CLE program. This year’s CLE, a one-hour program satisfying the state’s new technology requirement, was entitled “Data Privacy and Cybersecurity 101: Cyber Issue Spotting for Lawyers” and featured Courtney Achee and Steve Snyder of Bradley. Check the CLE tab at MeckBar.org for this video replay and our entire on-demand catalog.

Communications – The bi-monthly Mecklenburg Bar News, weekly Bar Blast e-mails, MeckBar.org, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and the MCB Membership Directory keep you up-to-date on important announcements and events, MCB offerings, judge and lawyer profiles, and CLE and networking options.

Diversity & Inclusion - The MCB is committed to member inclusion and engagement throughout all areas of the Bar including, but not limited to, initiatives of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and in partnership with local law firms and legal departments.

Lawyer Referral Service - The MCB Lawyer Referral Service is an ABA-accredited service that has provided prescreened client referrals to its lawyer panel members for more than 60 years. It is a vehicle for solo practitioners and small-firm attorneys to attract new clients.

Leadership Opportunities - We offer dozens of leadership possibilities, including chairing or vice chairing committees, sections, and the Young Lawyers Division (YLD), serving on the YLD Council, MCB or MBF Board or Executive Committee, or planning or speaking at CLE programs.

Volunteer Opportunities - MCB members give back and find meaningful pro bono and community service options through the work of MCB committees, sections & divisions.

Connect with a mentor or mentee through Linking Lawyers - This program provides a broad and flexible opportunity for mentorship within the MCB. Whether you are starting out as a new attorney, in the midst of a career transition, seeking to expand your network of peers, or looking to give back, Linking Lawyers provides an avenue in which to discuss your career in the legal profession.

Memorials - The MCB arranges memorial services in open court in memory of deceased members when the family desires.

Networking, Social and Sporting Events - Networking and social activities are scheduled throughout the year for MCB members including monthly luncheons on community issues, Annual Meeting, Law Day, Law & Society, Holiday Party, basketball and softball leagues, and the Legal Eagle Charity Golf Tournament.

Section Membership - The MCB offers 12 sections through which you can network and develop skills with attorneys who practice in the same area.

Swearing-In Ceremonies - Each year, the MCB coordinates Swearing-In Ceremonial Court Sessions for 200+ new attorneys and their friends and family.

Free Member Photos – At various times throughout the year, the MCB offers free headshot photo sessions for all MCB members. Digital copies of all headshots taken are provided free of charge.

Young Lawyers Division - If you are 36 years of age or younger, or within your first three years of practicing law, you are eligible for membership in the MCB YLD. Newly admitted lawyers are granted free membership in the YLD throughout the fiscal year in which he or she is first licensed in North Carolina. The YLD provides an invaluable opportunity for newly licensed lawyers to connect, volunteer, socialize, learn, and acclimate to life as a Mecklenburg County lawyer. Get involved with the YLD and start building a solid foundation of colleagues early in your legal career.

Maximize the value of your MCB membership. Get involved. Join a committee or section of interest. Become a leader. Make new friends. Generate resources and referrals. Get to know the terrific MCB and MBF staff. If you are already involved, invite a colleague to join you at your next MCB event. We are eager to help you do what matters to you.

If you have any questions or ideas on how the MCB can better serve its members, please contact MCB Interim Executive Director Leah Campbell (lcampbell@meckbar.org or 704/375-8624) or me (clam@bradley.com or 704/338-6059).

Best,

Very truly yours,
