The Bar Leadership Dinner of the Mecklenburg County Bar (MCB) and Mecklenburg Bar Foundation (MBF) will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 7 at the Mecklenburg County Bar and Foundation Center. The evening will feature a cocktail reception and dinner, a keynote address by Judge Albert Diaz of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, a celebration of outstanding MCB and MBF volunteer service, and the presentation of the Bar Leadership Institute (BLI) Class of 2019.

Keynote Speaker Judge Albert Diaz
Judge Albert Diaz, a native of Brooklyn, New York, joined the Marines after high school. He attended the University of Pennsylvania on a NROTC scholarship, earning a B.S. in Economics. Following graduation, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Marines. While in service, Judge Diaz attended law school on a full scholarship. He received his J.D. from the New York University School of Law and also earned a Master of Science in Business Administration from Boston University.
In the Marines, Judge Diaz served as a prosecutor, defense counsel, and appellate government counsel. Judge Diaz left active duty in 1995 for private practice. He remained in the Marine Reserves, serving as an appellate defense counsel, military trial judge, and appellate military judge. He retired from the Marines in 2006 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
From 2001 to 2009, Judge Diaz served on the North Carolina Superior Court bench, including service on North Carolina’s Business Court. Judge Diaz has been involved with the Mecklenburg County Bar Diversity & Inclusion Committee since shortly after its founding in 2004, and during his leadership of this committee created Lunch with a Lawyer, a mentorship program for rising ninth graders. In 2018, Judge Diaz was presented with the Mecklenburg County Bar’s Julius L. Chambers Diversity Champion Award, which celebrates persons in our community who have advanced the cause of diversity and equal opportunity. He was also one of a small group responsible for the creation of the Mecklenburg County Hispanic Latino Lawyers Bar
President Obama nominated him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit on November 4, 2009. The American Bar Association rated him unanimously well-qualified and he was confirmed by the Senate by voice vote. He received his commission on December 22, 2010.
Registration refunds are 1) 100% refundable for requests made 8 or more days before the event; 2) 75% refundable for requests made 7 to 4 days before the event (a 25% processing fee will be incurred); and 3) non-refundable for requests made 3 days or less before the event. Registrants requesting refunds 3 days or less before the event may be offered the option to transfer the registration to a substitute attendee. Payment is due in full if no cancellation is received or if cancellation is received 3 days or less in advance of event.
Reservations are not guaranteed if received less than 24 hours prior to the event. Registrations at the event door will be accepted on a space available basis--additional charges may apply. For some events, food or beverage is not guaranteed for last-minute registrants.
A sponsorship and/or advertisement refund will only be granted in the case that the Mecklenburg County Bar does not fulfill the commitment(s) stated in the signed "Sponsorship/Advertisement Agreement".
Refunds on any fees paid to the Mecklenburg County Bar Lawyer Referral Service are subject to the specifications of the MCB LRS Guidelines.
Exceptions or requests for refunds not covered by the above registration refund policy may be considered for approval by the MCB Executive Director or his or her designee.
