Mecklenburg County Bar
Ethics, Practice Management, State Bar & Court Updates
Desa Ballard entered private practice in 1987, after several years of working for the state court system, first as a law clerk to then-circuit judge Ralph King Anderson Jr., and later as law clerk to Chief Justice J. B. “Bubba” Ness. She practiced with a law firm for ten (10) years, then opened her own office in 1997.
Desa started doing attorney grievance work because of her familiarity with attorney grievance procedures, which she learned while working at the Supreme Court. That led to her representation of other professionals before their respective licensing boards, and the development of her “boutique” practice. Desa has studied the field of attorney ethics issues through membership in the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, and the Center for Professional Responsibility of the ABA, as well as independent study of the development of lawyer discipline throughout the country.
She has served on several committees with the South Carolina Bar and the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association and is the former Chair of the Ethics and Professionalism Committee for the Trial Lawyers. She lectures frequently on issues related to legal ethics and professionalism and writes for various legal publications.
With her years of experience, our speaker will explore the following areas in the ethics and professionalism arenas:
- Best and Worst Lawyer Practices
- Common Mistakes (What Gets You Into Trouble) and Remedies (What Gets You Out of Trouble)
- Advertising and Solicitation The views and opinions are not necessarily those of the 26th Judicial District Bar.
