Data and anecdotal stories suggest mental health and substance use (“MHSU”) disorders are growing in the rank and file of the legal field. This includes attorneys working “in-house” for companies in a variety of capacities from traditional legal department counsel to law-related roles in the companies’ business units, e.g., contracting, compliance, and the like. As in-house attorneys, it is imperative to be aware of these behavioral health issues, pressures, red flags, symptoms, options and resources for yourself and your colleagues. We are not immune to the opioid epidemic, stress, fatigue, and the myriad of behavioral health diagnoses too easily attributed to others, not ourselves. Substance abuse and debilitating mental conditions impact us, too.
