About the Lawyer Referral Service

LRS Purpose
The Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) is a public service of the Mecklenburg County Bar that has been in service for over 60 years.  The LRS matches people who need a lawyer, and can afford to pay, with a North Carolina licensed and insured lawyer in good standing.
LRS Lawyers
LRS lawyers practice in a large variety of practice areas including: Family Law, Criminal Law, Estates & Trusts, Business Law, Civil Litigation, Individual Rights, Employment Law, and Property Law.  The lawyers are assigned on a rotating basis within each practice area; gender, race, and ethnicity are not taken into account when assigning lawyers.  The LRS does not have information on the lawyers past case outcomes.  Each LRS Panel Member Lawyer must meet the following qualifications:
  • Licensed to practice law in North Carolina
  • In good standing with the North Carolina State Bar
  • Meets malpractice insurance requirements
Why Use the LRS?

A service offered at no charge to the client*, you are guided through an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system that seeks to match the referral based on your unique legal needs. If you cannot afford a lawyer, you will be directed to other resources offering pro bono legal service. This service is offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

*Lawyers participating in the LRS may set and collect their own consultation fees, if any. This information, and the fee structure, shall be discussed between you and the lawyer(s).
