HON. JAMES B. MCMILLAN FELLOWSHIP FUND Event
FEATURING DISTINGUISHED PANEL
Each year, the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation’s McMillan Fellowship Fund promotes justice and innovation within our local legal system by awarding paid fellowships to law students interested in pursuing a career with a local nonprofit or government agency. The primary source of financial support for these fellowships is the annual McMillan Fellowship Event.
This year’s event will be on Thursday, February 18 virtually via Zoom. The event will feature a distinguished panel of experts discussing the topic, “Conversation on Educational Inequality and How it intersects with the Criminal Justice System.”
The panel members’ address will be preceded by the presentation of the 14th annual Julius L. Chambers Diversity Champion Award to the late Mr. J. Charles Jones, Esq. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to diversity and equal opportunity in our community. It is named for the award’s first recipient, the distinguished civil rights attorney Julius L. Chambers, who represented the plaintiffs in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1971 decision upholding busing of students to promote integration. The presiding judge in the case at the trial court level was the late Hon. James B. McMillan, whose memory the McMillan Fellowship Fund honors. This year will be special because it is the 50th anniversary of the Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1971 decision.
We hope that you will join us for this exciting event--and in supporting this year’s McMillan Fellows--by attending the 2021 McMillan Fund Event!
