How the VLP Serves Citizens in our Community



The Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) works with several organizations in the Charlotte area to serve you. Each of these programs works with a specific population and has certain criteria that one must meet in order to qualify for their services.

 

LEGAL SERVICES OF SOUTHERN PIEDMONT (LSSP)

Legal Services of Southern Piedmont works with person of low income in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. LSSP can help you in the following matters:

TAX MATTERS   HEALTH
Earned Income Tax Credit   Medicaid and Medicare
Other Tax Controversies  

Nursing and Rest Home Problems

    Access to Health Care
     
PUBLIC BENEFITS CONSUMER LAW
Social Security   Predatory Lending
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Foreclosures
Work First Family Assistance   Debt Collection
Food Stamps  

Used Car Problems

Childcare   Unfair Trade Practices and Warranties
   

LSSP requires that clients meet certain income criteria. LSSP does assist Non-English speaking Hispanics and other immigrants.

LEGAL AID OF NORTH CAROLINA
(LANC)

Legal Aid of North Carolina works with persons of low income in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. LANC can assist you in the following matters:

FAMILY LAW   HOUSING LAW
Domestic Violence   Evictions
Limited Child Custody and Child Support   Subsidized Housing
    Tenants' Rights
    Utilities
OTHER    
Unemployment Insurance    

LANC handles public benefit cases, health cases, and consumer law cases in Cabarrus, Gaston, Stanly, and Union Counties. LANC does have income guidelines that one must meet in order to qualify for legal services.

COUNCIL FOR CHILDREN'S RIGHTS
 

If you want to help children in trouble, the Council is for you.

We train lawyers and lay volunteers to participate in representing children confronted by parents arguing over their custody, an unmet educational need arising out of their exceptional circumstances, compulsory exclusion from school, being committed and confined for institutional mental treatment, or delinquency charges in juvenile court. Not for sissies, but offering exceptional value for those who really want to make a difference.  The Council for Children's Rights offers the most comprehensive range of specialized advocacy and legal services for children in North Carolina
