How the VLP Serves Citizens in our Community

 

The Volunteer Lawyer Program (VLP) works with several organizations in the Charlotte area to serve you. Each of these programs works with a specific population and has certain criteria that one must meet in order to qualify for their services.

Legal Services of Southern Piedmont (LSSP)

Legal Services of Southern Piedmont works with persons of low income in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. LSSP can help you in the following matters:

Medicaid and Medicare

Nursing and Rest Home Problems

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC)

Legal Aid of North Carolina works with persons of low income in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. LANC can assist you in the following matters:

 

Family Law

Domestic Violence

Limited Child Custody and Child Support

Unemployment Insurance

Housing Law

Evictions

Subsidized Housing

Tenants' Rights

Utilities

 

LANC handles public benefit cases, health cases, and consumer law cases in Cabarrus, Gaston, Stanly, and Union Counties. LANC does have income guidelines that one must meet in order to qualify for legal services.  For assistance in any of these areas call: (704) 376-1600


 

Council for Children's Rights

The Council for Children's Rights offers the most comprehensive range of specialized advocacy and legal services for children in North Carolina.  We train lawyers and lay volunteers to participate in representing children confronting an ever-complex and already over-burdened legal system to ensure the childs needs are met whether it be in cases involving parents arguing over their custody, an unmet educational need arising out of their exceptional circumstances, compulsory exclusion from school, being committed and confined for institutional mental treatment, or delinquency charges in juvenile court. The volunteer opportunities available offer exceptional value for those who really want to make a difference.

26th Judicial District SelfServe Center

The SelfServe Center was created to assist individuals who wish to represent themselves in family law matters, or seek information about family law issues, including

 

Child Support, Visitation, and/or Child Custody

Domestic Violence

Modification of Child Support, Visitation, and/or Child Custody

To bring a Motion For Visitation before the court in a Child Support case

Violation of a Court Order for Child Support, Visitation, and/or Child Custody

Limited Driving Privileges

Small Claims
