MCB Volunteer Spotlight

R. Jeremy Sugg

R. Jeremy Sugg of Hedrick Gardner Kincheloe & Garofalo, L.L.P. serves as the 2012-13 chair of the Young Lawyers Division's Legal Assistance Committee.  This committee provides pro bono services in vulnerable areas throughout our community. In addition, Jeremy participates as a mentor in the Lunch with a Lawyer program where he meets with his two mentees once a month. Under Jeremy's leadership, the Legal Assistance Committee collaborated with the YLD Community Services Committee and Judge Rickye McKoy-Mitchell, Chair of the Bench Bar and Community Subcommittee of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee to provide services to the residents of the Salvation Army's Center of Hope and the Hidden Valley community. Lauren Lewis, chair of the YLD stated, "The YLD Council has truly benefitted from Jeremy's commitment to his committee&.he is dedicated, organized and hard-working, and he has a genuine passion for creating opportunities for our membership to serve the legal needs of the greater Charlotte community."

MCB:   What has been a highlight of serving on the YLD Council?
RJS:   Getting a glimpse at the inner workings of the Bar.

MCB:   What is your ultimate vision for the committee you chair?
RJS:   To give every citizen of Mecklenburg County that does not have access to an attorney an opportunity to receive free, general legal advice.

MCB:   What is the best advice you've received during your legal career?
RJS:    "Sue everybody for everything, and defend on all grounds." - Johnny C. Chriscoe, Professor, Campbell University School of Law.  (I don't know if this is actually the best, but definitely the most entertaining.)

MCB:   What advice would you give others?
RJS:   Remember the Rules of Professional Conduct are a floor, not a ceiling.
