MCB Volunteer Spotlight

Richard S. Wright

Richard S. Wright will soon complete a three-year term as chair of the MCB Fee Dispute Resolution Committee after serving four years as a Committee member.  Richard has dedicated a substantial amount of time and expertise over the past seven years to the MCB through his service on the Fee Dispute Committee.

The Fee Dispute Resolution Committee mediates and arbitrates fee disputes pursuant to RPC 1.5(f). Members of the Fee Dispute Resolution Committee attend quarterly committee meetings and are assigned two to three cases each month to mediate. Committee members and panelists must have mediation experience or be DRC certified mediators.

Interested in serving on an MCB committee?  The MCB is now recruiting members for more than 20 committees for the 2013-14 fiscal year which begins on July 1, 2013.  Details are available on www.MeckBar.org or by calling MCB Director of Lawyer Volunteer and Community Services Heather Blackley at 704/375-8624.

MCB:  Current Employer / number of years with current employer?

RSW:  Moon Wright & Houston, PLLC - Tom Moon, Andy Houston, and I started our firm in April of 2011.

MCB:  Area of Practice / Expertise?

RSW:  I practice primarily in the field of bankruptcy law, representing both corporate and individual debtors.  I also handle corporate litigation matters.

MCB:  Law School / Law School Graduation Year?

RSW:  I graduated from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1997.

MCB:  On which MCB or MBF Committees have you served?

RSW:  I've served on the Grievance Committee, I currently chair the Fee Dispute Resolution Committee, and I participate in the Linking Lawyers mentoring program.  I'm also a graduate of the Bar Leadership Institute.

MCB:  Please share something with our members that they may not know about the Fee Dispute Resolution Committee and the work that goes into it.

RSW:  Both lawyers and non-lawyers serve on the FDRC, so there's a great opportunity to work with people you might not ordinarily meet in your professional life.  By helping to resolve conflicts between lawyers and clients, the committee members also make a positive impact on the public and the bar.  For example, a well-known firm in town recently made a generous donation to the Bar Foundation in appreciation for the work done by one of our members, Jeff Long, in resolving a difficult dispute.

MCB:  What is the best advice you've received during your legal career?

RSW:  If you want to get a case settled, get it ready for trial.

MCB:  What advice would you give others?

RSW:  Check your ego at the door.  An arrogant, self-righteous attorney isn't much use to anybody.

MCB:  What is the most challenging part of your career?

RSW:  Finding a balance between personal and professional responsibilities is always difficult for busy lawyers, including me.

MCB:  What is your favorite part of your current job?

RSW:  The people I work with in my firm.  We laugh a lot, mostly at ourselves.

MCB:  Are there any other pertinent things you would like to share with the Mecklenburg County Bar and legal community?

RSW:  There is no better, or easier, way to get involved in public service than by volunteering for a committee at the Mecklenburg County Bar.
