2013-14 Nonprofit and Client Pro Bono Committee Report

Brandon M. Williams, Chair & Adam L. Horner, Vice-Chair

The Nonprofit and Client Pro Bono Committee implemented the Bar’s enhanced direct case placement pro bono program this year. Committee members were assigned an average of one case per week to review. The review process included completing an intake form with specific questions regarding the client’s case and information on income eligibility. Almost all cases were approved for pro bono legal services. Those cases that were not approved either did not have merit or the client never contacted the committee member for the follow-up call. Once the client was approved for pro bono services, MCB staff matched the client with a pro bono attorney. This process took three to four weeks, depending on the complexity of the case.

MCB staff and the Committee  will work together next year on tweaing the process and developing a more efficient process of vetting and placing clients with pro bono attorneys. The Committee will work closely with the Legal Volunteer Recruitment Committee on identifying the areas of law for which more volunteer attorneys are needed.

2013-14 Highlights

·         Put into action the direct case placement process for pro bono clients including veterans.

·         Committee members vetted close to 50 pro bono clients and placed over 30 with pro bono attorneys.

·         Continued to provide the Pro Bono for Nonprofits program assisting nonprofits with filing for 501(c)(3) designation.
