2013-14 Social & Networking Committee Report

Meredith S. Jeffries, Chair and Jason M. McGrath, Vice-Chair

The Social & Networking Committee was formed in 2012-13 as a new committee to coordinate a variety of social and networking opportunities to promote collegiality and a cohesive membership, including the Lawyers’ Luncheon Series and the MCB Holiday Party. The responsibilities of this Committee were previously part of the now-dissolved Social/Sports Committee, and this was their second full year as a Committee.

The Committee worked to utilize marketing techniques and personal outreach to drive participation in the Lawyers’ Luncheon Series. The series garnered strong attendance at the luncheons which took place in September, October, November, January, February, March and April.  Speakers for the 2013-14 Luncheon Series included presentations on the Charlotte Bobcats’ transitioning to the Hornets, Mayoral candidates forum, human trafficking and its impacts, great orators in history, the importance of community/nonprofit volunteering, and an inside look into the writing of Charlotte Squawks!

The Committee also closed out 2013 with the MCB Holiday Party. After success in 2012, the MCB again asked Holiday Party guests to bring supplies for the children of Larry King’s Clubhouse. The Clubhouse provides a safe haven and childcare for children whose parents have business at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse.  MCB Holiday Party attendance included 175 registered guests and 10 walk-ins, which nearly matched last year’s attendance. Seven MCB Sections (Tax, Immigration, Criminal Justice, Business Law, Corporate Counsel, Civil Litigation and Real Property) and the MCB Young Lawyers Division sponsored the party, allowing their members to attend for a highly discounted rate.

In addition to the Luncheon Series and Holiday Party, the Committee hosted a social & networking Happy Hour in SouthEnd, providing Bar members the opportunity to network and meet attorneys from different practice.

After a successful second year as a Committee, the Social & Networking Committee plans to evaluate current events through participant surveys and Bar member feedback, and will transition most social events to the new Bar & Foundation Center in 2015.

2013-14 Goals

1) Increase & diversify attendance at the MCB Holiday Party, Lawyers’ Luncheon Series and other Committee events

a.     Use new marketing techniques to drive attendance, including direct marketing by committee members and social media

b.    Outreach to new lawyers at Swearing-In Ceremonies and New Admittee CLE Programs (Continuing Legal Education)

2) Continue development of different types of networking events that help to attract a diverse group of the Bar membership

a.     Explore smaller group opportunities based on a lunch setting for networking

3) Evaluate current events through participant surveys, Bar member feedback and historical data
