2013-14 Future Bar/Foundation Center Committee Report

Co-Chairs Pender McElroy and Bill McMullen

The Future Bar/Foundation Center (FBFC) Committee made substantial progress on the building and construction of the new Bar and Foundation Center in 2013-14. On December 5, 2013 a successful Groundbreaking Ceremony took place at the Greenway Business Center site on Rozzelle’s Ferry Road despite misty weather. At the beginning of 2014, site construction was delayed due to inclement weather and unsuitable soil issues. Volunteer Carol Jones Van Buren and owner’s representative Katie Tyler helped facilitate the export of unsuitable soil and import of suitable soil. Even with delays, the anticipated move in date remains in October 2014. Staff is currently spending time to make decisions about furniture selections, security review, interior selections and site walk-throughs.

Beginning in January 2014, a Naming Rights Campaign cabinet was selected and includes co-chairs Dianne Bailey, Mac McCarley and John Lassiter. The quiet phase of the campaign kicked off in April 2014 and is projected to finish at the start of the school year in fall of 2014. At that time the broader portion of the campaign will begin, which will give all Bar members an opportunity to contribute and honor lawyers and law firms with a lasting legacy.

MCB/MBF signed the first of three possible interim lease extensions with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte at 1123 S. Church Street and will mostly likely need to utilize one more extension. MCB/MBF will remain at the Catholic Diocese until construction is complete at the Greenway Business Center.
