Future Bar/Foundation Center Committee, 2012- 13 Report

Co-Chairs Pender R. McElroy, Co-Chair and William H. McMullen, Co-Chair

The Future Bar/Foundation Center (FBFC) Committee made tremendous progress on the selection and future construction of a new Bar and Foundation Center in 2012-13. On June 19, 2012, the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation Board of Directors approved the Greenway Business Center on Rozzelle's Ferry Road. On July 26, 2012, the Mecklenburg County Bar (MCB) Board voiced support for the site and asked that the full MCB membership be given an opportunity to provide input. All MCB members were invited to submit feedback via e-mail and/or to attend a FBFC Committee meeting on August 14, 2012 to ask questions and provide input on the prospective site. On August 23, 2012, the MCB Board reviewed the input provided by MCB members and voted unanimously (with one judicial abstention) to approve the Greenway Business Center as the location for the future Bar & Foundation Center. The MBF closed on the Greenway Business Center site on February 8, 2013. Groundbreaking at the new site is expected to occur in fall 2013 with a twelve to fifteen month construction period.

In October 2012, MCB/MBF contracted Katie Tyler as the Owner's Representative to help oversee the construction of the new Bar Center. The FBFC Committee subsequently selected Intec Group as the architectural firm and Myers and Chapman as the general contractor on the project.

In order to gain a better understanding of how Bar members would utilize the new Center, the FBFC Committee asked Bar staff to host several focus groups throughout November and December 2012. MCB members from solo/small firms, medium/large firms, corporate counsel, public sector, and young lawyers provided dynamic discussions and useful feedback and suggestions. MBF Board member Jon Adams facilitated each focus group. Input received from these groups was included in discussions with Intec Group to finalize space usage and design plans.

The Luther Street lot was sold on January 4, 2013 for $275,000. The Bar Center at 438 Queens Road sold on May 20, 2013 for $1,004,135. MCB/MBF signed an interim lease with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte at 1123 S. Church Street and occupied Suite 103 beginning May 20, 2013. MCB/MBF will remain at the Catholic Diocese until construction is complete at Greenway Business Center.
