Basketball and Softball Leagues

Sports Committee, 2012-2013 Report
By: Ryan T. Smith, Chair and Janeen Hicks Pierre, Vice Chair

The Sports Committee was formed in 2012-13, to coordinate all MCB sporting opportunities, including basketball and softball leagues and any additional sporting competitions developed. The responsibilities of this Committee were previously part of the dissolved "Social Sports" Committee.

For its first year, the Sports Committee focused on the Lawyers' Basketball League and its preparation. With the collaborative efforts of the Committee and Basketball Commissioners, the MCB Lawyers' Basketball League completed its most successful season to date (based upon feedback from captains and players). Two networking events, including a networking happy hour and open gym night, helped increase the social aspect of the league.

On, the Committee utilized a newly designed Lawyers' Basketball League web page and team web pages. These pages featured team names, player photos, and contact information to increase social interaction. The same design will be applied for other sports leagues in the future. Additionally, the Basketball League Rules & Regulations were reviewed and revised to empower the Basketball League Commissioners to more effectively run the League.

Additionally, both MCB Basketball and Softball Leagues offered opportunities for MCB members to sign-up as individuals or teams for sports teams. The individual sign-up process is a new addition that helps increase the diversity of the leagues to include individuals from solo and small firms, in addition to teams historically from large firms.

The Committee explored opportunities to add a new fall MCB sports league, and will further develop a proposal for new league to be reviewed in 2013-14.

The Committee designated Mr. Bryan Stone to continue as Lawyers' League Softball Commissioner, with Mr. Reed Hunt joining as the Co-Ed Softball Commissioner. Mr. Ryan Smith and Mr. Nicholas Allmon committed to continue leading the Lawyers' Basketball League as Co-Commissioners.
