2013-14 Sports Committee Report

Janeen Hicks Pierre, Chair and Patrick M. J. Allen, Vice-Chair

2013-14 Highlights

·         Successful Basketball League & Co-Ed and Lawyers’ Softball Leagues, with the Softball Leagues reaching maximum capacity of 19 teams.

·         Continued and improved marketing and promotion on for the Lawyers’ Basketball League - including weekly e-mail blasts, team pages and score updates.

·         Successfully executed a change of venue for the Lawyers’ Basketball league with 100% positive feedback.

The Sports Committee was formed in 2012-13 to coordinate MCB sporting opportunities, including basketball and softball leagues and any additional sporting competitions developed. The responsibilities of this Committee were previously part of the now-dissolved Social/Sports Committee.

The Sports Committee focused on the Lawyers’ Basketball League & the two Softball Leagues (Co-Ed & Lawyers) and their preparation. With the collaborative efforts of the Committee and Basketball commissioners, the MCB Lawyers’ Basketball League changed venues from the Harris YMCA to St. Patrick’s Cathedral’s Gym in Dilworth. Captains and players all provided positive feedback about the new location.

The Committee engaged participants of the Lawyers’ Basketball League through online team web pages, weekly Basketball Blasts and updated scores and schedules. These pages featured team names, player photos, and contact information to increase social interaction. The Committee worked with Basketball Commissioner Ryan T. Smith to bring in announcer Monty McCullough to add excitement during the league’s tournament.

New this year, Basketball and Softball Leagues offered opportunities for MCB members to sign-up as individuals or teams. The individual sign-up process helps increase the diversity of the leagues to include individuals from solo and small firms who may not have access to a full team of players.

The Committee, guided by Reed Hunt and Clayton Leech, reviewed the current Softball Rules & Regulations and made some recommended changes that will be considered next fiscal year.  The Committee also continued to explore opportunities to add a new fall MCB sports league.  The fall sports league proposal will be further developed in 2014-15.

2013-14 Goals

1. Continue to increase the social aspect of the current MCB sporting events by developing new formal networking opportunities and encouraging more informal social participation.

2. Continue to increase the awareness of and participation in the MCB softball and basketball leagues.

3. Develop more consistent rules with regard to player eligibility for the MCB Softball Leagues.

4. Explore new sporting opportunities during the fall months.

5. Reach a more diverse group of Bar membership for participation in MCB Sporting events, including new members and varied levels of competitiveness or co-ed leagues.

6. Implement a process for introducing new sports commissioners.
