Law Day 2013

Featuring U.S. Congressman Mel Watt

Thursday, May 2, 2013

Hilton Charlotte Center City

12 p.m.

Our nation's annual Law Day celebration reminds us that the promise of equality under the law is what has made America a beacon to other nations. This year, we will celebrate Law Day with the theme Realizing the Dream: Equality for All to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The Mecklenburg County Bar will host the annual Law Day Luncheon on Thursday, May 2 at the Hilton Charlotte Center City at 12 p.m.  We are pleased to announce U.S. Congressman Melvin L. Watt will provide the keynote address at the luncheon. Congressman Watt practiced law from 1970-92 and served as the first African American president of the Mecklenburg County Bar in 1988-89, before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992.

The Mecklenburg County Bar's mission is to serve the public and the Bar members in improving and preserving the administration of justice with goals to advance public understanding and respect for the rule of law and the role of the legal profession, and to promote the highest ideals of professionalism, public service and access to the legal system. The MCB's Law Day Luncheon is one of our legal community's main vehicles for putting the MCB's mission into action.

In keeping with Mecklenburg County Bar's Law Day tradition, we will present the Liberty Bell Award to a non-lawyer who has served our public and legal community in immeasurable ways over the years. We will also honor the local high-school winner of the Charlotte Observer Law Day essay contest.

Please mark your calendars and plan to join your Bar for the 2013 Law Day Luncheon, it promises to be an inspiring address that reinforces the promise of equality under the law.
