New Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Announced

The Honorable Richard D. Boner accepted the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge for the 26th Judicial District of North Carolina. This transition comes after the announced retirement of The Honorable Robert P. Johnston earlier this month. The Senior Resident Superior Court Judge is responsible for court operations within the district. By statute, the senior resident superior court judge is the most senior judge in the district and is responsible for carrying out various administrative duties and appointing magistrates and some other court officials.

Judge Boner is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1971) and UNC School of Law (1975). He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court  MDNC, and U.S. District Court WDNC. He was appointed to the bench in April, 1987 by Governor Jim Martin. Judge Boner was a partner in the Charlotte law firm of Mraz & Boner, P.A. at the time of his appointment.

He served as a Special Superior Court Judge from April 1987 to December 1988, a District Court Judge from January 1989 to December 1998, and a Resident Superior Court Judge from January 1999 to the present. Judge Boner also served as a member and vice-chairman of the North Carolina Judicial Standards Commission from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2008. He was appointed to this position by former Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake.

In addition to serving as a judge, he is an adjunct professor with the Department of Criminal Justice at UNC-Charlotte, a position he has held since the mid-1990s. He is also an instructor in the paralegal program at Central Piedmont Community College, where he taught from 1991 to 2008 and then from September, 2009 to the present. Judge Boner is married with two grown children and is a member of Providence United Methodist Church.
