Interested in Joining the MCB Lawyer Referral Service Attorney Panel?

The purpose of the Mecklenburg County Bar Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) is to identify the most appropriate resource(s) for people with legal needs and when applicable, provide those who can afford to pay an established fee to a referred lawyer who shall provide a counsultation.

Currently there are 85 attorneys serving on the LRS panel. The types of cases most often referred, in descending order, are negligence, family law, landlord/tenant, bankruptcy, traffic and labor.

If you are a lawyer practicing in North Carolina and are interested in joining or renewing membership in the Lawyer Referral Service Panel, please download the LRS Panel Application (same application for new and renewing), complete it and send it to the Mecklenburg County Bar. Please download the current LRS Guidelines and read thoroughly.

Did you know...

  • The MCB Lawyer Referral Service receives an average of 40 calls per day from people with legal concerns or problems.
  • It is not a low-income legal aid program or a pro bono service.
  • The MCB LRS is the only lawyer referral service in the state of North Carolina that is approved by the American Bar Association and is authorized to use the ABA logo and lawyer referral service slogan "The Right Call for the Right Lawyer."
  • An LRS referral entitles clients to a consultation of up to 30 minutes with an LRS attorney panel member practicing in their area of need.
  • LRS attorney panel members maintain professional liability insurance and meet American Bar Association standards for membership.

There are many benefits of joining the MCB LRS

  • The LRS is one of the most visible programs the MCB offers to the community. The LRS public webpage is consistently one of the top five most visited pages on MeckBar.org, averaging more than 5,000 visitors each year.  By joining the MCB LRS, panel members have the opportunity to reach a broader geographic area while also potentially increasing their business and client base.

  • Attorney participation can be profitable. In 2013-14, attorney panel members have already earned more than $330,000 in commissions and consultation fees.

  • MCB LRS annual membership may quickly pay for itself. In 2013-14, more than 50 percent of LRS attorney panel members recouped their membership fee within the first quarter and more than 90 percent had done so by the end of the second quarter.

LRS panel attorneys benefit directly when

    • a referral becomes a paying client
    • a potential client is satisfied with an attorney's initial consultation, increasing the likelihood the client will remember the attorney's name if they have a legal problem in the future; and
    • a satisfied client passes on the attorney's name to co-workers, friends, and family members when they need a lawyer.
