James E. Ferguson II

2011 Julius L. Chambers Diversity Champion

 

The Mecklenburg County Bar named James E. Ferguson II the 2011 Julius L. Chambers Diversity Champion at the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation McMillan Fund Dinner on February 24, 2011. The annual award celebrates persons in the community who have advanced the cause of diversity and equal opportunity.

 

Fergie is co-founder of Ferguson, Stein, Chambers, Gresham and Sumter, P.A., the first integrated law firm in the state.

 

Recognized as one of the nation's top trial lawyers, Mr. Ferguson co-founded South Africa's first Trial Advocacy Program, offering it to both black and white lawyers, even during the apartheid era. He served over 15 years as General Counsel and member of the National Executive Committee of the American Civil Liberties Union. He is past chair of the Charlotte Community Building Initiative. He has taught at Harvard and North Carolina Central Law Schools, served as Scholar in Residence at Santa Clara Law School, and has taught trial advocacy throughout England and the United States, including the first advanced trial advocacy program offered by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA). He is past Chair of NITA, past President of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers and North arolina Association of Black Lawyers, and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

 

Established in 1995 by the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation, the McMillan Fund supports justice and innovation within our local legal system by awarding law students summer fellowships in not-for-profit and government agencies. With the Fund's help, fifty Fellows have worked at such agencies as Legal Services of Southern Piedmont, International House, the Trial Court Administrator, EEOC, U.S. District Court, Public Defender, Council for Children's Rights, District Attorney, and the U.S. Attorney.
