The MCB Swearing-In Ceremony offers new admittees the opportunity to be sworn-in with the majority of their peers in front of a panel of judges from many of the courts present in Mecklenburg County.  Remarks are made by the presiding federal and presiding state judges and the MCB President.  The MCB Young Lawyers Division Chair calls each new admittee to the front, in groups of 10, and the new admittee's sponsor presents the admittee to the Bar and Bench.  Following the Ceremony, new admittees and their guests have the opportunity to meet and network with members of the Bar and judiciary at a complimentary reception.

The Swearing-In Court Sessions are available to those new admittees who are unable or do not want to participate in the formal Ceremony and who wish to be sworn-in to the NC State Court ONLY. During the Court Sessions, the presiding judge will call the new admittees' names and give the attorney sponsor an opportunity to present the new admittee. Space is limited for these sessions - registration available on a first-come first-served basis.   Dates for court sessions to be announced this fall.

Important Instructions

1.   The court requires new attorneys and their sponsors be dressed in appropriate court attire.  Men should wear a suit and tie, and women should wear a suit, preferably neutral colors (blue, black, grey).  Failure to comply with this dress code will prohibit us from allowing the new attorney and/or his or her sponsor to participate in the ceremony.

2.   Bring your law license with you.  The Board of Law Examiners and the NC State Bar have stated that an applicant cannot be sworn-in prior to receiving his or her license.

3.   You must have a practicing North Carolina attorney to present you during the Ceremony.  If you do not have one, please indicate so on your registration form, and arrive early so that we may provide you with one.

4.   You may bring up to 3 guests with you.  Due to space and cost constraints, we are unable to make exceptions.

5.   At the Court's request, no children under the age of 7 are allowed entrance.

6.   If you would also like to be sworn into Federal Court during the Swearing-In Ceremony, please visit the North Carolina Western District Web site at http://www.ncwd.uscourts.gov/attorney-admissions. First, complete the Application for Admission to Practice at http://www.ncwd.uscourts.gov/sites/default/files/general/attorneyadmission2013.pdf .   If you are attending the  MCB Swearing-In Ceremony, print and bring this completed form, together with a copy of the Order admitting you to practice in the Western District or a Certificate of Good Standing from the aforementioned district, along with the $276.00 fee. NC Bar Professionalism for New Admittees Program

All active members admitted to the North Carolina State Bar after January 1, 2011, must complete the North Carolina State Bar Professionalism for New Admittees program in the year the member is first required to meet CLE requirements. Credit for the program will be applied to your annual mandatory continuing legal education requirements. If you were licensed in another state for 5 or more years at the time you were admitted to the NC Bar, you are exempt from the requirement; however, you must notify the State Bar of the exemption in the first annual report form sent to you.
