2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  "Getting Lost" in Our Own Lives

Robynn E. Moraites, Executive Director, North Carolina Lawyers Assistance Program

Lawyers suffer increasingly from depression and anxiety, impairments of their own accord, but also major contributing factors to substance abuse. This program examines some of the root causes leading to substance abuse and factors that the legal profession itself contributes to these conditions. Participants will look at major stressors in the legal field and how these contribute. In addition, the program will cover statistics on substance abuse in the legal profession, a comprehensive examination of the signs and symptoms of substance abuse, the brain chemistry present in substance abuse, and some suggestions for prevention. Participants will be asked to examine some of their own behaviors that could lead to eventual impairment.

3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Communicating Success with Clients the Court and Colleagues

Mary Kaczmarek

In addition to technical competence, successful attorneys need excellent ethical interpersonal and communication skills.  Knowing the "how to do" and "what to do" is only the beginning of providing excellent service to firm clients.  This program is designed to promote insight into how personal communication styles and strategies may help or hinder career success while staying within the boundaries of an ethical practice.  We'll discuss best practices for rapport with clients, the court and colleagues.  We will also consider how to create and manage effective client service teams comprised of more senior and junior colleagues. Finally, there will be a focus on how to repair client relationships when there is a service shortfall.

4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Emerging Ethics: Regulating the New 2.0 Frontier

Camille Stell, Vice President Client Services, Lawyers Mutual
