This CLE lecture will focus on how lawyers and other legal professionals can respond to social and legal injustice, and the commitment of one attorney to ensuring equal justice for all.  Bryan Stevenson is the founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama.  Mr. Stevenson is an acclaimed public interest lawyer who has dedicated his career to representing the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned.  Under his leadership, EJI has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing practices, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill and aiding children prosecuted as adults.  Stevenson recently won an historic ruling in Miller v. Alabama where the U.S. Supreme Court held unconstitutional mandatory life-without-parole sentences for children ages 17 or younger.  Mr. Stevenson's work fighting poverty and challenging racial discrimination in the criminal justice system has won him numerous awards including the ABA Wisdom Award for Public Service, the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Award Prize, the Olaf Palme International Prize, the ACLU National Medal of Liberty, the National Public Interest Lawyer of the Year Award, the NAACP Ming Award for Advocacy, the Gruber Prize for International Justice and the Ford Foundation Visionaries Award.  Mr. Stevenson is a graduate of Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Government, and has been awarded thirteen honorary doctorate degrees.  He is also a Professor of Law at the New York University School of Law.
