Program & Speaker:

From 2003 to 2006, The Honorable V. Stuart Couch was assigned to the Department of Defense Office of Military Commissions to prosecute selected individuals detained at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.  His conduct during that assignment was the subject of a front-page article in the Wall Street Journal about his decision not to prosecute a case because the evidence was obtained through torture.  In recognition of his actions, Judge Couch was awarded the American Bar Association's "Minister of Justice" Award in 2007, and the German Bar Association's "Pro Reo" Award in 2009.  After a distinguished 22-year career in the United States Marine Corps as a pilot, a prosecutor and an appellate judge, Judge Couch retired from the military and joined the Charlotte office of Poyner Spruill, LLP in 2009.  He was appointed a United States Immigration Judge by Attorney General Eric Holder in October 2010.  Judge Couch's experiences as a Guantánamo prosecutor are highlighted in author Jess Bravin's book, The Terror Courts: Rough Justice at Guantánamo Bay (Yale University Press, 2013).
