 MBF Bylaws
MISSION The Mecklenburg Bar Foundation is a charitable organization which has as its mission: to advance public understanding and respect for the rule of law and the role of the legal profession; to promote the highest ideals of professionalism, public service and access to the legal system; and to support the goals of the Mecklenburg County Bar.
PURPOSE The Mecklenburg Bar Foundation is a non-profit corporation organized in 1962 under Chapter 55A of the North Carolina General Statutes. The purposes of the Foundation, as set forth in its Articles of Incorporation, are broadly to engage in any lawful activity for which corporations may be organized under the North Carolina Nonprofit Corporation Act and specifically include the following
1. To improve the knowledge, professional skill, and technique of the members of the Mecklenburg County Bar, or its successors, through educational processes such as lectures, seminars, instruction classes, and other means designed to keep the members abreast of the times and informed concerning changes and innovations in the law.
2. To counsel and encourage young lawyers in the development of their proclivities in the arts of the legal profession.
3. To provide scholarship aid, awards, and reward to worthy and qualified students of law schools.
4. To receive contributions for and to make grants, gifts and awards to public schools, colleges, universities, other educational institutions, public educational foundations and public charitable foundations for their use in developing libraries, providing scholarships, building educational facilities and other uses pertaining to bettering educational opportunities and educational institutions, particularly as pertain to education in fields related to law and jurisprudence.
5. To enhance public awareness and knowledge of the law and its impact on our society and the role of lawyers in our community.
Goals for 2007-08
1. Continue to build on the success of the 2007 Patron's Fund Campaign. 2. Establish an endowment and begin the process of building a Planned Giving Program.

Investment and Finance Committee Responsible for orderly maintenance of the Foundation's books and financial records, preparation of periodic (quarterly) balance sheets, "available cash" summary sheets and budget. Planning and Development Committee Develops and implements financial development plan and long-range plan for the Foundation. The committee uses the yearly Patron's Fund Campaign as its major fund-raising tool.

McMillan Fellowship Committee The James B. McMillan Fellowship Fund was established in 1995 to honor the memory and example of U.S. District Court Judge James B. McMillan. The Fund is awarded annually and is administered by the Foundation for the Carolinas. The purpose of the fund is to promote justice and innovation within the legal system in Mecklenburg County by awarding summer fellowships to at least two law students desiring work experience with not-for-profit governmental agencies.

Endowment Committee Advises the Foundation's Board of Directors on issues relating to the management and use of endowed funds and supervises the Foundation's planned giving program and other efforts to obtain gifts of endowed funds.
