History
The Mecklenburg County Bar, 26th Judicial District, was established in 1912. Today there are approximately 4,000 members who serve the public and profession through a variety of programs and services. These functions are carried out through the established committees and sections under the general policies and procedures approved by its elected Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
Mission
The mission of the Mecklenburg County Bar is to serve the public and the bar members in improving and preserving the administration of justice, and to assist the North Carolina State Bar as described by statutory requirements.
Mecklenburg County Bar 2007-08 Goals/Action Steps
1. Professional/Civility
A. Implement specific action items to increase the Bar's attention to and participation in civility, professionalism, intentionality and satisfaction within the profession of law for attorneys and judges.
1. Gather the chairs of relevant committees to discuss, organize and plan specific steps including the organization of related committees so that like topics and activities regarding lawyer satisfaction issues are coordinated across committees 2. Specific committee chairs to meet and begin planning process -- to include chairs of: Bar 2010, BLI, Community Outreach plus Community Schools Project, Diversity, Lawyer Support, Professionalism plus Silent Partners. 3. Plan workshops that incorporate individual attorneys who have experienced difficulties in one or more of these areas and emerged stronger and more satisfied. 4. Determine CLE credit possibilities for these workshops 5. Adopt a Code of Conduct and have attorneys sign. Indicate in Directory which attorneys have done so.
B. Continue to encourage appropriate funding for state court system
C. Continue to address ways to encourage increased diversity in MCB
1. Diversity Committee 2. Community Building initiative/LDI
D. Continue to explore ways to promote equality under the law/access to justice
2. Relationships/Communications Within MCB
A. Explore ways to connect with constituencies within the MCB
B. Determine model for incorporating local voluntary Bars.
C. Explore ways to recognize and preserve the history of the MCB
D. Finalize steps to reach out to non-licensed attorneys, particularly in corporate legal departments
3. Finance and Operations
A. Continue the financial stability of the MCB
B. Continue to look for new revenue sources, particularly from advertising/sponsorships
C. Explore ways to grow and enhance CLE offerings
D. Explore avenues to discern and adopt staffing best practices
1. Allocation of staff duties and time 2. Management, organization, storage and preservation of files and records
E. Continue to explore Bar Center location possibilities
4. Relationships With Community
A. Continue to explore ways to enhance MCB's relationship with the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation
B. Determine model for incorporating local voluntary Bars such as Leary Bar.
C. Consider appropriate joint programs with community groups or organizations such as International House and Latin American Coalition.
D. Finalize process for Access to Courthouse so that attorneys may have access if desired. Finalize and implement internal procedures for Bar staff to implement in conjunction with Sheriffs Office.
These goals are carried out by the work of the established committees and sections.
